Parametric Plans

Terms of sale

In short: a plan from Parametric Plans is not an engineered design, and whether you need a permit is a question for your building department. The rest is below.

Design a shed

This is not an engineered design

A plan from Parametric Plans is generated by software from the choices you make in the configurator. It has not been designed, reviewed or stamped by a licensed engineer or architect, and it is not a substitute for one.

Joist, rafter and beam sizes come from published span tables for SPF #2 lumber, checked against ordinary residential loads: 40 psf live and 10 psf dead on the floor, 30 psf ground snow and 10 psf dead on the roof. That is structural sanity, not engineering. If your site sees heavier snow, high wind, seismic activity, poor soil or a slope, or if anyone will live or sleep in the building, have the design reviewed by a professional where you build.

Permits and codes are your responsibility

Whether you need a permit is decided by your local building department, not by us. The model residential code exempts a one-story accessory building up to 200 sq ft from a permit, many jurisdictions stop at 120 sq ft, and most also limit height. The configurator measures your design against the common limits and tells you where it stands. That is guidance to help you ask the right question, not an answer to it.

Setbacks from property lines, easements, utility locates, homeowners' association rules, covenants and zoning are separate, local, and not modeled at all. Check them before you build.

What you are buying

A PDF build package for the design you configured: drawings, a bill of materials, a cutting plan, a consumables estimate and a build guide. It is generated in your browser the moment the payment is confirmed and downloaded straight away. Nothing physical is shipped.

The bill of materials and the cutting plan are takeoffs of the pieces the software placed. The consumables page is an estimate, at the rate printed beside each line. Buy a little over, and check every dimension against what is actually on your site before you cut.

Electrical, plumbing, insulation, interior finish, ventilation, foundations below frost depth, site drainage and anchoring against uplift are not part of the package.

What you may do with the plan

You may use the plan to build the shed it describes, as many times as you like, for yourself or for someone you are building it for, and you may share it with the people helping you build it or inspecting the work.

You may not sell, publish or redistribute the plan, or offer it as plans of your own.

Keeping your plan

The PDF you download is your copy. The browser you bought it in keeps another under Your plans, until its site data is cleared. Stripe emails a receipt, which is your proof of purchase.

We keep nothing about your purchase — no account, no copy of your design — so there is nothing on our side to look a lost plan up in. A plan lost from both your files and your browser is lost, the way a lost download is anywhere else.

Refunds and mistakes

The plan is a digital product delivered the moment it is paid for, so sales are final and there are no refunds for a change of mind. Any refund is at our discretion.

If you find something in a plan that is wrong, use Report this design in the configurator. Reports carry the design that produced them, and a plan that turns out to be wrong is fixed in the software for every plan after it. We read every report; we cannot answer them, because the form deliberately asks for no way to reach you.

No warranty, and a limit on liability

The plan is provided as is. To the fullest extent the law allows, we make no warranty that it is fit for any particular site or purpose, that it meets the code where you build, or that it is free of error.

Building is physical work with real risks, and how a building is sited, built, inspected and used is in your hands, not ours. To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for any loss, damage or injury arising from the plan or from anything built from it, and our total liability for anything to do with a purchase is limited to the amount you paid for it.

Some places do not allow some of these limits. Where that is so, they apply as far as the law there permits.
